This Is Us

Forest Hills Jewish Center

Forest Hills Jewish Center is an egalitarian, Conservative congregation that is a welcoming home for Jews of all genders, backgrounds, colors, abilities and life stages.

It is our mission to

  • Nourish the Jewish soul through prayer.
  • Create a community that is sustaining in times of joy and sorrow.
  • Be a second home to Jewish singles and families of all ages and at all stages.
  • Cultivate and nurture a loving support for the State of Israel.
  • Be a source for lifelong learning, social action, tzedakah, and tikkun olam.

These basic principles sustain our synagogue as a participatory, inclusive community whose members feel connected to one another, to their Jewish past, to the Jewish future, to Israel, and to Jewish communities throughout the world.

This is us

With a membership in excess of 300 families, we are proud of our ability to appeal spiritually to a broad spectrum of Jews. We nourish the Jewish soul through prayer and grow meaningful and authentic connections with our tradition and with each other through our daily, Shabbat and holiday services. Rabbi Graber’s sermons are eagerly awaited each week for the erudition and insight he brings to the important issues we are all thinking about. Through the emotion and musicality of his professionally trained voice, whether solo or as a leader of the congregation, Hazzan Levin brings more meaning, depth and beauty to our prayers.

Community

We are more than a place of worship.  We are where people make friends that last a lifetime.  A place where you can be seen, heard and understood for who you are as a Jew and as a person.  FHJC is a strong collaboration of our clergy, staff, lay leaders and membership. Our members are actively involved in all aspects of congregational life from shaping synagogue policies and organizing events to planning the growth of our community. Our FHJC groups provide the scaffold of our community; Sisterhood, Men’s Club, Youth Groups for children of all ages and Nagillah, our community chorus. FHJC groups such as SURJE, Standing Up for Racial Justice & Equity, work towards a more equitable world. And through our longstanding links to Transition House and City Harvest, our members live the Jewish values of tikkun olam and tzedakah.

Our members are actively involved in all aspects of congregational life,
We are a vital community partner in Forest Hills. We work for a more just city and provide a home for many classes and community organizations and events.
We identify with the ancient classic rabbinic teaching of kol yisrael areivim zeh lazeh – all Jews are connected, no matter who they are, what denominational label they might wear, or where they call home. We see ourselves as part of the larger Jewish community and are pleased to affiliate with  United Synagogue and the Jewish Theological Seminary.

We are centrally located in the heart of Forest Hills, convenient to all transportation. Across from a leafy park, we are set back from the bustle in a pleasant niche off Queens Boulevard. Our beautiful sanctuary provides an oasis for prayer and meaningful connection.
We invite you to visit us to renew yourself and connect with others through prayer, celebration, learning, and social action opportunities.
